Colum McCann wins IMPAC Award
New-York based Irish novelist, and former Clonkeen student.Colum McCann has won the world's richest literary award for his novel Let the Great World Spin.
Colum beat nine other nominees to become the second Irish author to win the €100,000 International Impac Dublin Literary Award.
 
Let the Great World Spin uses Philippe Petit's famous high-wire crossing between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974 as a motif around which to assemble the stories of 10 New York characters.
The novel, which won the coveted National Book award in the United States in 2009, was de-scribed by the Impac judging panel as a "remarkable literary work".
Congratulations to Colum on this marvellous achievement. On his visits home to see his parents Colum is a frequent and always welcome visitor to the school and has addressed senior English students on several occasion

Poetry Aloud Competition

A number of students entered the Poetry Aloud Competition organised jointly by Poetry Ireland and the National Library.

The CD Project

The CD project has been up and running again this year. It began in November and the students participating in it have been writing some great songs and music. Their studio session ion and recordings are completed and pressed.

First in Ireland in Maths

Colin Egan (6th year) came first in Ireland in the recent Youth Maths Olympiad qualifier. As a result he leads the Irish team of six into the international maths competition in Kazakhstan in July.

Gaisce Presidents Award

Congratulations are due to over 20 students from the our current 6th year who received their bronze gaisce award in may 2009 when they were still in 5th year.. Students from the same group are due to receive their silver award in the coming weeks.
